In May of 1889, van Gogh was admitted to the asylum of St. Paul de Mausole, near St. Remy-de-Provence. Some of his most famous work was painted there, between bouts of mental breakdowns and nervous attacks. He painted landscapes from his window, flowers from the garden, and views of the hallways and courtyard at the asylum.
